The students also recalled how the “Students Win” Student List was formed.
“The candidates were not chosen by party leaders, nor did anyone compile a list in a room and announce it to the rest. Instead, they were selected by students through a decision-making process we built over almost two years of blockades, plenums, discussions, and collaborative work. That process was neither quick nor simple,” the students said on their website.
They emphasized that direct democracy is rare, and that it entails dialogue, disagreement, argumentation, revisiting decisions, and accountability toward the people participating in the process, which is precisely why it was important to them to form the electoral list in this way.
The students recalled that no single person on this list is meant to overshadow all others, and that they are not looking for a new leader around whom yet another cult of personality might be built.
“We do not expect them to be infallible, nor do we expect them to have an answer for every question. We expect something much simpler, though, in this country, evidently much harder: that they be accountable for their actions, listen to the people they represent, explain their decisions, and understand that a parliamentary seat is not a reward, a privilege, or the start of a political career,” the students said.
They reiterated that a parliamentary seat is a public role, and that the mandate belongs to the citizens.
Accordingly, all candidates on the Student List signed a statement accepting moral and political responsibility, committing to fulfilling their duties and working towards meeting all student demands and achieving the goals set out in the Social Agreement and the Students’ Program of Minimum Demands.
