A written reply to N1 said that witnesses who attended the meetings have been questioned. The prosecution said the witnesses would also testify at the trial of Culture Minister Nikola Selakovic and three other officials charged over alleged irregularities in the procedure.
The confirmation follows an October investigation by Britain's Guardian newspaper, which reported that then-President Aleksandar Vucic personally convened a meeting with officials at the Presidency building in February 2024 to discuss the proposed Trump Tower development at the site. Vucic has not been charged in the case.
TOK told N1 that it proposed introducing into evidence the written resignation of Dubravka Djukanovic, former head of the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, in which she confirmed that three meetings were held in the first half of 2024 at which officials were told to initiate proceedings to remove the complex's protected status. At a meeting on May 22, she and her Belgrade counterpart, Olivera Vuckovic, were reportedly told to resign if they refused. Both women refused to initiate the proceedings and resigned from the Institute.
